🔺 "The Sea Spreads Out"
The sea is wide,
And the waves are raging in the distance.
"Comrade, we're going far,
Away from our land."
There are no songs on deck,
And the Red Sea is noisy.
And the shore is both gloomy and cramped.
My heart aches when I remember.
It's already struck eight on the forecastle,
A friend needs to be replaced.
He had barely come down the ramp,
The mechanic shouts, "Move!"
Comrade, I can't stand a watch -
The stoker told the stoker.
The lights in my furnaces are not lit at all,
I can't keep a couple in the cauldrons.
"Go tell them I'm sick.
And I quit my watch before I finish.
I was sweating profusely, exhausted from the heat,
I can't work anymore, I'm dying."
The friend left... He grabbed a shovel,
Gathering the last of his strength,
He opened the furnace door with a familiar push
And the flame lit him up.
His face, his shoulders, his exposed chest,
And the sweat pouring off them.
Oh, if only someone could look in there,
He would have called the stoker hell!
The steam boilers are making an ominous noise,
Shuddering from the force of the fumes.
Like thousands of snakes, those pairs are hissing,
Bursting out of pipes in some places.
And he, bending before a hot fire,
He deftly threw coal with a shovel.
It was gloomy below -
A ray of sunshine and daylight
Can't get into that corner.
No wind today, no urine to stand,
The water warmed up, it was stuffy and hot.
The thermometer has risen by forty-five,
The whole stoker is without air.
When he finished throwing,
He drank some water,
Desalinated, unclean water.
Sweat was falling from his face,
And there were traces of soot,
He heard the driver's speech:
"You haven't finished your shift -
You don't dare leave,
The mechanic is not happy with you.
You should go to the doctor and tell him -
He'll give you medicine if he's sick."
Grabbing the handrails weakly,
He was climbing up the ladder,
Go to the emergency room to get medicine
He couldn't, he was suffocating from the heat.
He went on deck, he's already unconscious,
His vision blurred.
He saw a blinding light for a moment,
He fell, and his heart was no longer beating.
They ran up to him with cold water,
Trying to bring him to his senses.
But the doctor said, shaking his head:
Our art is powerless here.
The deceased was lying in the infirmary all night.
Dressed in a sailor's costume.
He was holding a wax candle in his hands,
The wax was melting, heated by the heat.
They came to say goodbye to their friend
In the morning
Sailors, friends of the fireman.
The last gift was given to him,
The grate is burnt and rusty.
A grate was tied to his feet
And they wrapped him in a cot.
The old man, the ship's priest, came,
And the tears of many glistened.
The ocean was quiet and motionless
At that moment,
The waters shone like a mirror.
The authorities came, the captain came,
And "Eternal Memory" was sung.
The board was lifted with a trembling hand,
And the body slid into the shroud.
In the depths of a deep unknown sea
Forever, splashed, drowned.
The old woman waits
In vain for her son to come home,
If they tell her, she'll cry.
And the waves run from the propeller astern,
And their trail disappears in the distance.
